“Unbreakable Bond: Dog and Cat Found Together in Field Refuse to be Separated, Find Forever Home Together”
At the Jackson County Animal Shelter (JCAS), a remarkable friendship between Sassy, a 6-year-old dog, and Shadow, a 1-year-old cat, captivated the staff. These two inseparable companions displayed a bond so strong that it defied all odds. Abandoned in a field, Sassy and Shadow could have easily gone their separate ways, but instead, they remained steadfastly devoted to each other until rescue arrived.
Lydia Sattler, JCAS’s animal services director, expressed her awe at the pair’s connection, saying, “This cat and dog were practically glued together. It’s really rare to see that.”
A compassionate passerby noticed Sassy and Shadow, recognizing the dog’s hunger. He left briefly and returned with some kibble, placing it before the famished pup. To everyone’s surprise, Sassy did something remarkable—she let the cat eat first. Sattler recalled, “She sat right there while the kitty was eating out of the dish and waited for him to finish before she ate. It was so sweet.”
The man, while providing sustenance, contacted JCAS for assistance in rescuing the two animals. When the rescue team arrived, Sassy and Shadow showed no resistance. They happily entered the van and settled into their usual position: curled up together.
During the journey to JCAS, the siblings remained content, resting peacefully side by side. It was clear to the rescue team that these two couldn’t be separated, although the challenge of accommodating them together arose upon reaching the shelter.
“We didn’t want to separate them, but we have a dog-specific room and a cat room,” Sattler explained. “However, there’s a large space for multiple cat housing that was available, so we decided to put them in that room so that they could stay together.”
Sassy and Shadow, determined to remain close, never strayed too far from one another as they settled into their new life at the shelter. Sattler recounted, “Everywhere the dog went, the cat was right there with her. They snuggled together every day. Every morning, our staff would walk in to see what cute thing they were doing. It was just so adorable.”
The inseparable bond between Sassy and Shadow left an indelible mark on the JCAS staff, who were adamant about finding them a forever home where they could stay together.
“Whatever they’ve gone through so far, they got through it together,” Sattler emphasized. “So, we knew that they needed to continue staying together.”
Sattler and her team tirelessly searched for the perfect home for Sassy and Shadow. Finally, a little over a month after their rescue, their wish came true.
“They ended up finding a great home where they get to continue that bond that they have,” Sattler shared. “They’re continuing to enjoy their time together, and they don’t have to worry about being hungry anymore.”
Sattler receives regular updates from Sassy and Shadow’s new family, and the heartwarming news of their enduring friendship brings her joy. Although they now embark on a new life brimming with excitement and adventures, one thing remains unchanged—their unwavering love for each other.
While the caregivers at JCAS miss witnessing their adorable snuggles every day, they are overjoyed knowing that the affectionate duo has found their rightful place.
“They’re getting lots of love from their family,” Sattler said. “And now, they’re finally enjoying life.”
