Over the weekend, a group of friends had an unexpected turn of events during a bachelor party in Minnesota. While enjoying a leisurely canoeing trip on the Minnesota River near Carver, Mitch White and his companions heard a distressed yelp that immediately caught their attention.
To their surprise, they stumbled upon a St. Bernard dog buried up to its collar in thick mud, just a few feet away from the water’s edge. Without hesitation, Mitch and his friends knew they had to do something to help the stranded canine.
“We were trying to figure out what to do in that moment. I mean, seriously, my fiancée Kelly probably wouldn’t marry me if we left the dog behind!” White humorously shared.
Resourcefully, the group used their canoe oars as makeshift shovels and tirelessly worked for at least thirty minutes to free the trapped dog from the sticky mud. The poor dog seemed exhausted and drained of energy, so the kind-hearted friends made sure to feed him and give him water.
Realizing the severity of the situation, they reached out to emergency personnel for additional assistance. With the combined efforts of the bachelor party and the emergency responders, the dog, whose name was revealed to be Ed, was finally freed and safely reunited with his owner, George Niskanen.
According to Niskanen, Ed, the adventurous St. Bernard, had a tendency to wander off occasionally but always managed to find his way back. Sadly, this time, he had been missing for a day before the Carver County Sheriffs Office contacted Niskanen about the dire situation his beloved pet was in.
“Big thanks to the Carver County Sheriffs Department and the Carver Fire Department for their help in getting him up the hill. It’s a relief to see him back to his old self,” Niskanen expressed his gratitude.
Filled with appreciation for the heroic efforts of the bachelor party, Niskanen is eager to personally thank them with a card and acknowledges that every single one of them deserves recognition for their bravery and compassion.
Since his return home, Ed has been gradually regaining his strength, going from being unable to walk to now eating and drinking well. Thanks to the quick and selfless actions of a bachelor party that turned into a rescue mission, this heartwarming story had a happy ending for everyone involved, especially Ed the adventurous St. Bernard.
